Bogotá, Colombia: The Best Affordable Cancer Treatment Alternative For Americans
For those facing high medical expenses in the United States for cancer treatment, getting the care you need doesn’t have to mean going to Mayo Clinic or other costly centers. A new option is rising in South America for cancer treatment that combines affordability with quality for Americans: Bogotá, Colombia.
Why Choose Bogota for Cancer Treatment?
Bogotá has become a top destination for cancer patients, offering advanced cancer treatments at a fraction of the cost found in the U.S. and Europe. With a reputation for high-quality care and internationally trained specialists, Bogotá provides options that make sense financially and medically.
The Luis Carlos Sarmiento Angulo Cancer Treatment and Research Center (CTIC): Cutting-Edge Care Within Reach
One of Bogota’s premier cancer institutions, the CTIC, offers advanced treatments like chemotherapy, radiation, and surgery, all in a well-equipped facility. Internationally recognized cancer expert Anna Fagotti, MD, PhD, has praised the center, noting in an April 2024 article in EL TIEMPO that the center is ¨even at a higher level than the best treatment centers in Europe.” Her endorsement highlights Bogota’s commitment to affordable, high-quality cancer care.
So who is Anna Fagotti? Anna Fagotti, MD, PhD, is world-renowned in the field of gynecologic oncology, particularly known for her expertise in advanced ovarian cancer surgery and minimally invasive surgical techniques. She has made significant contributions to improving surgical outcomes in complex gynecologic cancers, including pioneering techniques in robotic and laparoscopic surgery for ovarian, endometrial, and cervical cancers.
Among her many contributions is the development of the Fagotti Score, a preoperative predictive scoring system that assesses the likelihood of achieving optimal cytoreduction (complete tumor removal) in advanced ovarian cancer surgeries. She is highly regarded for her research in optimizing surgical approaches to improve survival rates and quality of life for cancer patients, and she is frequently cited in clinical guidelines and research publications worldwide.
So, that is not just anyone saying that the CTIC is as good as it is, that is someone pretty important in that field. Don´t take my word for it or someone else on the internet saying how good medical care is in Bogotá, listen to the expert and what she said about it.

Personal Experience: A Testament to Quality Care
I can personally attest to the quality of healthcare in Bogotá. While I have not had the need to visit the CTIC, I’ve undergone both emergency and a scheduled surgery in Bogotá at local hospitals that were in my prepaid private Colombian Insurance network, and both experiences were positive. The emergency care I received was prompt and efficient, and the surgical procedures were performed with the utmost skill and care.
Interesting Personal Note: Colombian Surgical Specialist disappointed with USA
I talked with my surgeon on a follow-up visit after a scheduled surgery. Because I was from the USA and received medical care in Colombia, he told me about his daughter who was living in the USA, her child, which was his grandchild, was getting a surgery that he specialized in. The problem was that her husband did not want to come to Colombia and have him do the surgery. He even offered to supervise in the surgery room and have someone he recommends perform the actual surgery. The dad said, ¨No, it is getting done in the states.¨ At surgery there was a complication with the anesthesia and he almost died. The Colombian surgeon said that would have never happened in Colombia, as every surgical patient has an exam with their anesthesiologist before the surgery and that never happened in the states, not to mention he would have been in the room supervising the procedure.
